RE: HP e9150/e9180 Computer Failures - TheWiz - 10-19-2009
Well you could do either 4x3gb or 2x6 gb, but it would probably be easier and less expensive to populate all the slots with 2gb of ram. Take out the 1gb sticks in there, leave the twos in, and thats how many slots you would have to fill. To revert to the 5.13 bioses, I prefer to make a bootable DOS usb drive by using this tool and this dos image.
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1525839/Programs/HP%20USB%20DOS%20Drive.exe
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1525839/Programs/Windows%2098%20Startup%20Disk.zip
Then you copy the 5.13 bios image to your bootable usb stick. Copy afu.exe (the flashing program) from here.
http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1525839/Programs/AFU.exe
Then on your flash drive rename the bios file to bios.rom. When you boot off the usb drive type afu bios.bin. Then restart and your done!

Any recommendations on what memory to purchase and where?
Thanks for all your help!!

Well, theres a lot of good stuff out there, here's an example of a set where you would buy one set, then you would leave the three 2GB sticks in there now, and add the set you choose from newegg. I would choose something from 1.5v-1.6v, but you dont want to spend a lot of money on something that won't fix the problems, but it will fix the speed issue, along with reverting to the older bios.

There's a pretty good example of a set that would be compatible, but remember that the max ram you can get is PC 10600, and you dont want to get high voltage or high price for a system like this.
Then again, its only one man's opinion

As I had mentioned earlier I had purchased my e9180 last Friday evening but thought I would seek your advice...
Should I keep it or turn around and ship it back?
If I should keep it should I down grade the bios as you explained in a previous reply or should I purchase a different mother board altogether?
Your expertise is greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Okay, well right now I am trying to convince users to downgrade to 5.13, and make sure they are running in triple channel performance for maximum performace. To keep the computer from crashing you turn it on, then once you hit the login screen you restart again, which keeps the capacitors from losing their charge. (My theory, but it works) I would probably try to get a case manager just in case and notify the person you bought it from, but I can't see HP not EVENTUALLY fixing it. If you want to go your own path, I would buy this motherboard for 200 bucks and be done with it, and then you can overclock and get nice ram chips, it simply depends on what your needs are. Heres the motherboard I reccomend:

Thanks "TheWiz"!
My current configuration once I get it will have 12GB Ram so I'm hoping it will run in triple channel.
However, I'm tending to lean towards the path of just purchasing a new motherboard and do away with dealing with HP.
Thanks again for the info.

Anytime my friend!
RE: HP e9150/e9180 Computer Failures - Ranger5 - 10-19-2009
But that is precisely the problem. No one seems to be able to find files for BIOS 5.13 (or 5.18 or any other version than 5.22). I have looked and even found a link on HP's Japan site to a version 5.18 but the link was dead. From the best that I can tell, HP has scrubbed previous versions of the BIOS from their web sites and only users who have not upgraded their BIOS yet, or still have earlier installation files, actually have access to earlier versions of the BIOS. From what I can tell customers need to be encouraged to archive them at a publically accessible, also publically non-erasable, location off of HP's web sites.
Setting up an archive of previous versions of the BIOS is critical for testing or for proving that HP has crippled these systems with 5.22. I wish I could help but I have already flashed my motherboard to version 5.22 and I never had an earlier version in file form.
Am I correct or have I missed something?

Well, I'm here to help. I am a super moderator over at biosmods, so I save all of these bioses my friend. Unforunatly I did not make an image for 5.13, but heres 5.18. Follow the USB isntructions above for success.
Heres that magical 1MB File: http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/1525839/Bios/TRU518.ROM

I tried logging in to the HP website and it said I was banned for making legal threats! They are a real piece of s**t!
I'm going to contact the attorney general in my state because I think the class action suit would take forever. But I will check into them anyway. I may even sue HP in my own city in small claims court.
