RE: HP e9150/e9180 Computer Failures - PCleery - 03-23-2010
Hi guys, I just noticed HP has a new BIOS 5.27 posted on HP.com for the e9150t. What do you think. Have you looked into it. I'm still leery after the dumbing down they pulled last time.
PS I'm finding my system is working fine as long as I keep my bluetooth headphones fully charged.

I'm in the "if it ain't broke don"t fix it " camp. Especially with a system that has a problem plagued history. Flashing the bios on ANY system has the risk of bricking the system. If there is a tangible KNOWN benefit to upgrading or changing the bios, it still needs to be weighed against the risk of the flash procedure.
Gaining 2ms of speed (maybe) isn't worth the risk of frying the mobo. Does HP say what the 5.27 addresses?

Here's what HP says on the 5.27 BIOS
Description: IPMTB-TK Motherboard BIOS update improves system stability, resolves an issue with high fan speed, and resolves an issue where the system hanging when entering sleep mode.
I'm with you on the if it's not broke thing. I am going to leave well enough alone. I don't even have the fan speed problem and it goes in and out of sleep fine.

Hello Guys, I have an e9150t that I purchased in July 2009, and had all the issues that everyone else has experienced. I managed to get my system as stable as a rock early on.
I had to make several changes to the system, but I have not experienced any lockups or BSOD screens since I made the changes.
One of the changes was to update the BIOS to 5.22, but there were several other changes as well.
I have used this system since I upgraded to Win7 in October without one lockup or other issue.
I flashed the BIOS with the latest 5.27 and the system is noticeably more responsive than before. It was quite fast to start with.
The new BIOS is an exe file that is run from the hard drive like any other exe file. A small window pops up and advises you are about to update the BIOS, and you select ok, and in about 1-2 minutes, the flash is complete. You just reboot the system and an error will appear about the checksum error, which is normal for most BIOS flashes, and then it continues.
It does not change any settings. I noticed the performance increase immediately. When I ran my defrag program, it defragged about twice as fast as it had before. I've used the system now for two days without any issue at all, except for the faster response of the system, if you want to call that an issue. It really is faster.
Hope this helps.

Hi guys, it's been a while. I have had several BSOD incidents now. You know about the Blu-tooth thing. Now I recently purchased the movie Avatar in Blu-Ray and had a heck of a time getting it to play. After some BSODs I got it to work. Yesterday morning I went to the head and when I came back BSOD. I had no programs going. This time I took the time to write down the error numbers.
***STOP:0x0000009C (0X00000000000000000) 0XFFFFF88002FDDC70,0X00000000000000000,0X000000000000000000
As usual, I don't have a clue what that all means. All I know is I still have about six weeks on my warranty so am left with the dilemma do I go through the hassle of HP support or not. I want to stick it to them, but then I don't want the frustration. If you know what the numbers mean let me know OK. Thanks guys and wish me luck.

The STOP code is pretty random, but if you attach the minidump log I can tell you what happened.

Hi Wiz, lets try this again. I tried yesterday to attach but couldn't do it.

The BSOD incidents are becoming more frequent. I have lost count of them. At least one every two or three days now. If my financial situation were better I would throw this crap out the window. I have a couple of employees who I warned about HP and they purchased Mac's. They are both happy. So it's lesson learned and contact HP support for me. I'm not looking forward to it.

Hi Wiz,
I am new here but I read about the problems with the 91xx HP series.
I am having the BSOD too and I would like to attach one of several dump files. Unfortunately when I try to post the file this board tells me that it is not an acceptable file for the board and it makes me remove it or it does not let me post.
I wonder if you would mind checking this out to see what the problem is.
I would really appreciate your help with this.
Thank you very much.

Sorry about that guys. I have a filter that only allows recognized file extensions to be attached, which is why it rejeced it. I have now added the .dmp extension, so upload away
Thanks,
