Feet and millimeters are different measurements. Just make sure that you do not overfill the space, or you will run intoe ven worse heating problems. Doda google search for copper sheets .0024" to get an idea of the thickness I am referring to.

I see this post hasn't been repsonded to for some time, but I am so glad I found it. It helped me get my HP tx1000 out of its coma. I watched the video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctHTF3oNdxI and then disassembled my laptop. My problem was after getting everything apart and building the heatshield and reseating the GPU I then realized I had to reassemble it with a multitude of different size screws lying on the table along with the parts. Thank goodness for the hp repair manual at http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00853874.pdf you gave a link to.
Also a variation on the penny... I used a hammer to flatten it and then discarded the thermal boot that had previously sat betweent the GPU and the heat sink and replaced it with the flat penny.
THe bottom line is after I got every thing together the unit booted up the first time and has been running ever since. Thanks again. This post was a real life saver.

Great work! Really glad to hear you will be getting more life out of the death HP lurks over. In any event I too found that if the penny is too large it will mess up heatflow so I eventually took a hammer to it myself and it works well. I keep reapplying the mod every so often to ke it working well, but its definitly a failure on HP without a doubt

@TheWiz
hello there, i have my tx1222au (its an australian edition i think..) black screen... before died, everything is normal, except my wifi, won't turn off. after that, the tx1222au died. ok, i complete that following step above, but it seems like my tx1222 still doesn't work... i already resodder the GPU chip with 150watt of halogen lamp for 3 minutes. put a copper shim with 0.8mm thick. and add a thermal paste to the GPU, also the Processor. and still, my tx1222au doesn't boot to BIOS. i also do these step for 3 times... and still with a black screen.
i check my GPU and Proc. heat while i turn it on. the heat of both doesn't generate heat too much. but, after i check my northbrige,.. very hot!
what's wrong with my tx1222au??? any other idea???
i almost forgot... before my TX died, i update my BIOS version... could be a problem of my tx1222?
thank u,
amgine

Hmmm normally the northbridge does not get to be that hot, bt these units in general have heat issues. I would really say if your not getting video out something has to be up with the GPU still. If you leave it on do you see any kind of notifications, errors, or beeps?

Aaaah finally, thank u for the reply TheWizzz!!!
hmmm, it means i must to connect the video output (vga port, s-video out) into the monitor to wake up the GPU? (on progress)...
when i turn it on my tx1222, all i see is a black screen, with all blue led, except the mute button with orange led. and still, doesn't boot to bios with no beeps..
or because updating the bios version could be a major problem?
Great Forum!!!,

If the new BIOS booted before you took it apart, then it shouldn't be a problem. I'd first make sure your RAM is secured and that nothing trivial is preventing POST. My next guess would be to make sure the GPU looks like it hasn't been damaged and that the contact pins are soldered down from the heating.
Thanks for the compliment too

I know that this discussion is concerning tx1000s, but I am experiencing almost exactly the same symptoms with my tx2500z. I am having troubles with the display, well, displaying. 9 out of 10 times when I turn on my computer, the only display that will function is the VGA out. Rebooting several times will often get the laptop's display to kick in and work, but it's totally random.
Does anyone know whether or not these symptoms are connected with the problem that the tx1000 experiences? I don't have an nvidia chip of course, as the tx2500 uses AMD and ATI chips. Still, it sounds eerily familiar. A search for the symptoms I'm seeing brought up this discussion.

Hmmmm its possible you too are experiencing the heating issue, so I would reccommend following the same instructions given and see if your temps go down, its seems to be all about temps.
Meanwhile all the tx1000 users jsut won a lawsuit settlement from NVIDIA regarding their laptops and is offering free replacements.
It may be an ATI, but if the heatsink is not doing its job then I'd crack it open
