HP TX1000 Thermal Paste Mod (Fixes Overheating) - TheWiz - 10-16-2009

The HP TX1000 series has been notorious for having heating problems and GPU failures, along with Wifi connections being dropped and black screens that render the tablet useless. The overheating causes all of these symptoms, and its a combo disaster of lousy manufacturing and NVIDIA. Here's how you can nicely cleanup tour tablet and fix all the problems HP doesn't acknowledge, but remember by doing so it will void whatever sad warrenty HP has for you.

1. The main cause of the problem is the GPU chip, because it generates an abnormal amount of heat it makes the other pieces work up a sweat. The second problem is that the thermal grease on the CPU is pathetic, so we will also fix this.

Things you'll need: Rubbing alcohol, Coffee Filters, Arctic Silver 5, regular set of screwdrivers, copper plate or copper penny before 1982.

The hardest part is following this disassembly guide. YOU MUST follow all parts of this tutorial, or you will find yourself worse off then you did before.

Here's the PDF: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00853874.pdf

Once successfully opened up, unscrew the four screws that secure the heatsink of the CPU. Use the rubbing alcohol to remove the old thermal grease, and replace with a clean layer of arctic silver. Do not Rescrew the Heatsink. Then you have to worry about the GPU. For this you will need to sand down a penny before 1982, because of its copper content. Sand the penny down, then apply a layer of arctic silver on both sides of the penny. Then you can resecure the heatsink. then an optionall cleanup is to remove the black paint on the heatsink fan vents, using acetone. These three thing should make the laptop actually usable on your lap, and you will notice a significant temperature decrease.

Finally, if you are stuck in the boat the black screen of death, you will have to follow an additional procedure to properly resodder you GPU chip. In order to do this, you must use a heat lamp 100-200w to resodder the chip, then by doing the instructions above it will prevent this from happening again. Here's a video that shows resoddering the chip. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctHTF3oNdxI&feature=related

I did not make this video, its a homestyle type video, but it shows a really easy way of doing it and its clear. But if you just have excess heat or wifi drops, doing the thermal paste replacements and copper penny is enough. For those who have the black screen, here's an additional thing to try. Take a blanket, wrap it around the laptop, and turn it on for roughly 2 minutes. If it boots, then you don't need to follow the steps on the Youtube video, but you'll want to do the thermal paste mod so it doesn't happen again.

Here's some pictures of the Thermal Paste Mod:

UPDATE: Make sure the penny is sanded down with a metal filer HALF way because it is to big to fill the gap otherwise.

RE: HP TX1000 Thermal Paste Mod (Fixes Overheating) - fransisstern - 11-13-2009

Hi there.
This is Fransis.
The only permanent fix is to replacing the thermal pad with 2mm of copper and some arctic silver. Find out that the position of the heat sink which was comprised initially by the overheating of the GPU. Use a good thermal paste, I recommend the Arctic Silver brand.

RE: HP TX1000 Thermal Paste Mod (Fixes Overheating) - TheWiz - 11-13-2009

Well, if you sand down the penny enough, then you don't have this problem.

Thanks,
TheWiz

Hi Wiz.
Myself Steeve from United States, Just read your post and came to know regarding
the heating problem in your HP TX1000. I feel so sorry for that, I would like to
suggest you, go through the connection of CPU heatsink and other on the board.
Thanks for your post and stay connnect.

RE: HP TX1000 Thermal Paste Mod (Fixes Overheating) - TheWiz - 11-17-2009

I sort of understood what you said, but I didn't quite catch the last part. If by any chance you speak Spanish then I can read that too.

Thanks for looking out,
TheWiz

RE: HP TX1000 Thermal Paste Mod (Fixes Overheating) - rojertwose - 11-18-2009

I have a TX1000. I did the thermal compound mod and it has ran much cooler. Also reformatting it had help quite alot (Less than 5GB left on the HD before reformatting)

I still have the same issue with the laptop shutting down. This usually happens when I'm streaming videos online such as, MTV.COM (Full Episodes). I'm only able to watch about 20MINS of one episode (30MINS?) before my laptop shuts down. With the thermal compound mod, I did add compound to the GPU, but left the thermal pad and did not add any copper sheets.

The TX1000 runs of High Performance setting with a Laptop Cooler (3 Fans blowing air up).

Is there something wrong with the GPU being over heated?
According to HWM.
Temp is ranging to 63*C-68*C
Core1 62*C-66*C
Core2 57*C-65*C
GPU 71*C-72*C
And this is on HIGH PERFORMANCE w/COOLER.
AIM. WINAMP, FIREFOX, and HWM are running besides other small tasks...

RE: HP TX1000 Thermal Paste Mod (Fixes Overheating) - TheWiz - 11-18-2009

Yeah, the one I fixed didn't have it that bad, but it was certainly not suitable for using on your lap until I did this. I would highly highly highly reccommend sanding a peeny before 1982 down in half, put a little thermal paste on both sides, remove the thermal pad, and let her fly. The problem is a combination of a bad thermal pad, and the 6150 chipset is simply really bad with heat in all the HP units. When I first did the mod, I barely sanded down the penny, and it was actually worse because it caused the heatsink to timp a bit. The gap is .0025 thick, so if you want to put a pure metalcopper plate in there, it would work to. Also, wen you are on battery performance, it cools things way down with the Speedstem cool and quiet, so all of these things should keep her from shutting down.

Also, your CPU temps look a bit high, I got mine down from about where yours are to about 37C for the CPU and 59C for the GPU.
Thanks,
TheWiz

Did you get my PM rojert?

RE: HP TX1000 Thermal Paste Mod (Fixes Overheating) - tsakmd - 11-19-2009

hi to everyone, i'm new here, i have the same problem with my tx1410us notebook, a black out screen... i was able to revive my notebook for a while by pressing hard the j, k, l and enter keys while i turn on the power..., but intermittently while using my laptop it while hung up, a white screen with some vertical blue lines and will stop responding... i need to presss the power button for a few seconds to shut it down... then i'lldo the hard pressing of the enter key to power it up again...
i would like to ask if ever i do the modifiaction described here, do i still need to do the heating of the motherboard? and do i have a problem with my video screen?
thank you in advance
btw my temp are as follow using only power save mode, because whenever i used hp recommended or high performance my temp shoots up and my computer will just hung up, a white screen appear with some vertical colored lines, and will stop responding
GPU 67-74 C
core 45-52 C

RE: HP TX1000 Thermal Paste Mod (Fixes Overheating) - TheWiz - 11-19-2009

Yeah, the high performance kills all of these systems without this mod. If you are able to boot on battery fine, you dont have to resodderw ith the lamp, but if you cant boot at a ll now, you might want to go find a nice lamp. The screen inself most likely isn't damaged, and I would do this mod to confirm.

Thanks,
TheWiz

RE: HP TX1000 Thermal Paste Mod (Fixes Overheating) - gchiu - 11-21-2009

I'm trying to disassemble my Tx1000 and am stuck at the audio/ir cable which connects via a Zif socket to the motherboard.

It's not a Zif socket type I've seen before. There are a couple of metal clips on both sides but pulling towards me doesn't seem to do anything except break my nails.

I've watched a couple of youtube videos and all they seem to do is yank the cable out!

So, what's the correct way of opening this Zif socket?
